CElimination of Harmful Ingredients

Safer chemistry is a key element of our product stewardship approach and is embedded across formulation design, raw material evaluation and product development. We identify and assess substances of concern across the product lifecycle, including volatile organic compounds, carcinogenic, mutagenic and reprotoxic substances and heavy metals, with the objective of reducing potential environmental and safety impacts while maintaining product performance.

Elimination of Harmful Ingredients

Our approach is supported by internal screening processes, formulation reviews, regulatory checks and continuous evaluation of safer raw material alternatives. These reviews help guide substitution or reduction opportunities where technically feasible, while ensuring that product quality, application properties and compliance requirements are maintained.

Progress is monitored through defined formulation-level metrics, including the use of CMR substances with and without styrene. This enables us to track movement over time, prioritise areas for further intervention and strengthen accountability within the product development process. The VAM-VAE project, which is underway, is a key step towards advancing safer ingredients through next-generation emulsion technology.

Metric Target 2030 Performance in FY 2025-26
Lead and heavy metals free paint 100% Architectural coatings to be lead and heavy metals-free 100% Architectural coatings free of lead and heavy metals
Minimising/eliminating the use of CMR* raw materials (kg/KL) 25% Reduction from baseline 23.2 (with styrene)
17% increase from baseline

3.8 (without styrene)
15% decrease from baseline

CMR refers to carcinogenic, mutagenic and reprotoxic substances. Heavy metals are not added as part of our formulation. We intend to measure the presence of heavy metals contained in raw materials and proactively eliminate these.
